While it’s been mostly evident in the wake of his incredibly successful 2016, we now have official confirmation that Drake is the most popular recording artist in the world, as the Toronto artist has just been named IFPI’s Global Recording Artist of the Year.
IFPI is a non-profit international organization based in Switzerland that tracks and campaigns for recording industries worldwide, and this award, according to their website, is a “unique and authoritative accolade that reflects an artist’s worldwide success across physical and digital formats, including downloads and streams.”
While BeyoncĂ©, Rihanna and The Weeknd also managed to crack the organization’s top 10 for 2016, the overwhelming success Drake achieved with last year’s Views put him above any competition for the number one spot.
IFPI cites milestones like Viewsbecoming the first project on Apple Music to reach one billion streams, “One Dance” reaching one billion streams on Spotify, and the similarly huge successes of “Controlla” and “Too Good” as unequivocal evidence of Drake’s global dominance.
This news shouldn’t be all that surprising, but it is nice to have solid, objective evidence to point to when we mention Drake being the biggest music artist in the world.
Congratulations to Drake on his success, especially because it doesn’t look like his worldwide superstar reign is going to be slowing down anytime soon.
