Over the weekend, Daddy Yo and Baba Imade were at it again.
At this point, you can call these two young men, the Tom and Jerry of Nigerian pop culture. They are always chasing themselves but never having a one-on-one square off.
Davido slyly mocked Wizkid for jumping on new sounds that aren't his so as to be international. Wizzy replied via Twitter that Davido is just bitter because he couldn't crack the international market. Of course, both stars didn't mention names, preferring just subliminal shots.
Davido and Wizkid have been at it since 2012 after a Nigerian Entertainment Awards in America went awry. The two would later publicly settle their beef in December 2012 at the EME concert in Lagos. This truce did not last.
Everyone knows both Davido and Wizkid are very ambitious young men who want to be the number one singer out of not only Nigeria but Africa. It is only natural that their hunger for international success will make them bump heads over and over.
The two pop stars will forever be pitted against each other whether they like it or not. One cannot make a move without being compared to the other. They have had their fair share of baby mama dramas and scandals. Importantly, these distractions haven't stopped them at all. They have only grown bigger creating larger than life personas for themselves.
Davido and Wizkid are the only two stars on their playing field. It would take Tekno and Runtown two years of consistent hits to be at their level. The on and off pals are at the pinnacle of the Nigerian pop scene. The only person standing in Davido's way to becoming the undisputed number one is Wizkid and vice-versa.
This is why the two have to slug it out on beats, music and celebrity lifestyle. It is nature, there is only one king in the jungle. There can't be two kings. It is only natural for them to have beef. It's the way of life, think Jay-Z, Nas. Jay-Z did not become the undisputed King of American Rap until he survived Nas' deadly onslaught.
Wizkid and Davido should stop dragging their legs. Let them go and record a diss track or two. Whoever wins will be the better of it. It could even thrust the two to further greatness- competition breeds creativity. And we can all testify that Wizzy and OBO haven't been at their best in a long while.
